A young fisherman from Cornwall got more than he bargained for this week when he discovered an extremely rare lobster.

Chris Puckey found an incredibly rare blue lobster whilst he was out fishing just off Polperro at the weekend.

The colour of these lobsters is due to a genetic abnormality that affects how they produce a certain protein, resulting in the blue hue from that of other lobsters found in the ocean

It is also believed that there is about a one in two million chance of coming across this type of lobster.

Upon his discovery of the female lobster, Chris contacted the local fishmonger and owner of Kitty’s Lobster, Crab and Seafood Shack Jacquie Spencer.

“When Chris contacted me about the lobster, I spoke to my husband about what to do,” said Jacquie.

“We thought about returning it to sea but decided it could end up in another pot or eaten by another lobster.”

Jaquie thought about what to do with this unique find and decided to contact an aquarium in Fowey coincidentally, already housed another blue lobster.

The lobster was taken to its new home on Monday where Jacquie hopes it will thrive in a safe environment away from predators.

Jacquie said she was “really pleased” that the lobster has gone to her new home, and that it will be cared for and looked after by the team.

She also praised Chis and other young fishermen in Cornwall for their hard work and hopes that the communities across the Duchy will continue to support them.
