Work is due to start this week on installing solar panels on the roof of a popular beach café after a battering by Storm Pierrick last month.

The storm in April destroyed the outside seating area at Castle Beach Café off Cliff Road, Falmouth as well as destroying nearby beach huts.

The destruction meant that owner Emily Davidson had to divert savings meant for installing solar panels to bring down her energy bills. A Crowdfunder had been set up in March to help raise the rest of the money.

But when a company called GreenGen saw about her plight they got in touch with Emily to offer a “very welcome” new quote for solar panels.

Posting on Facebook she said: “Following the storm damage, GreenGen got in touch to offer a (very welcome) new quote for our solar panels.

“Now we just need £5505! And yes, they are under warranty for storm damage 😂 “We're 82% there on the CrowdFunder website, with another £380 in cash donations at the café. That means we only have £629 to go, whoop, whoop!”

She said work constructing the roof canopy (which the panels will be installed onto) begins today (Friday, May 10).

“I would like to thank every one of you that has donated to our cause. The solar panels really will help to future-proof the business,” she said.

The storm on April 10/11 destroyed the outdoor seating structure and picnic tables plus the benches along the slipway Emily launched the Crowdfunder back at the beginning of March to raise money to install solar panels on the south facing roof of the Castle Beach Café to try and cut her huge energy bills.

She said the reason was that her electricity bill at the café was five times what it was when she took over the café in 2021.

She had originally been quoted a sum of £8,950 for the PV panels to meet 1/2 of her required energy load, using the roof space available.
